Tasting River Water as Soups

Japanese artist Miku Sato cooked miso soup using water from a river in Yokohama. Korean artist Hosung prepared doenjang-guk—a Korean soup similar to miso soup—using water from a river in Seoul. This video documents our performance: collecting river water, cooking the soups, and exchanging them to share a meal together. Miso soup and doenjang-guk—two similar dishes from Japan and Korea. Our faces also resemble each other.

There is a shared past between our countries: one of occupation, and of being occupied. In this act, we made soup with the water that runs through each of our cities. We exchanged these soups—made with dirty water, made for each other—and tasted them.
